Importance of Meeting with Your Advisor
Scheduling a regular appointment with your advisor is like scheduling a dentist appointment. Your advisor might have reached out and you know you should probably check-in, but it's just such a pain to carve out time and it may not be entirely clear why it’s good practice.
Your finances, much like your teeth and gums, are permanent fixtures in your life. Finances don’t go away and without regular attention you run the risk of things getting out of balance and outdated. A regular check-in with your advisor isn’t limited to a review of your feelings concerning risk and the portfolio’s performance, it also provides for a conversation concerning any changes in your life such as employment status,
health, or family. The opportunity to have this discussion allows for adjustments to your investment account, consideration for changes in tax situation, a review of beneficiary designation, and to consider insurance coverage.
Often times my visits to the dentist remind me that flossing is important and I recommit to doing it every day... until I get off track. A regular meeting with your advisor can provide the same kind of reminder to adjust the contributions to your retirement account savings, get your will updated, or recommit to your spending plan. Just like the dentist, if you are on a regular schedule with your advisor, issues can sometimes be
anticipated and mitigated.
